It's about Banda Aceh, a small Town where I have lived. The city is located on the tip of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. The city also borders the Indian Ocean and the Malacca Strait.
Perhaps you have heard the news of the tsunami disaster in 2004. This is where the disaster happened. Tital casualties as many as 170,000 more people. The numbers are quite large. Many of my relatives and friends died at that time. But lucky I am alive.
Why is the tsunami here killing so many people? That's because the people of this town did not know what tsunami was. So when a strong earthquake happens we do not try to evacuate ourselves. We only stayed in their own houses until the tsunami came.
But the disaster has taught us many things. Now residents of this city understand that strong earthquakes can trigger a tsunami. So every time an earthquake happens we will run to the evacuation site.
All right, let's forget about the tsunami. Now let's talk about the beauty of nature.
If you are a sea lover, adventure lovers, mountain lovers, nature lovers, then Banda Aceh is the place. I recommend you visit here. Here you can enjoy some beautiful beaches. You can also enjoy snorkeling and diving.
You can also try mountain climbing. Some of the mountains here have an extreme climbing lane.

I would love to visit Indonesia, especially for diving. But I simply do not like holidays in Islamic countries, I do not like the atmosphere with women covered up, only men on the streets etc. - so I prefer Thailand or other more Buddhist countries, with more open and relaxed cultures.
Now it seems that especially your province Aceh is the worst place in Indonesia based on "Islam crazyness "- for example here a Wikipedia quote:
"At least 72 people were caned for various offences, including drinking alcohol, being alone with someone of the opposite sex who was not a marriage partner or relative (khalwat), and gambling. People who 'come out' as gay are also caned and punished by the government." (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aceh)
So what is your opinion on this? Feel free to defend your country - but I just want to tell you this outside view: Aceh seems to be the worst parts of Indonesia where crazy Islamists play medieval ages... you might not understand this, but canning people for "being alone with someone of the opposite sex without marriage" is exactly that.

Johni,
I was touched to love you for reading my blog. I would like to add whether Indonesia is an archipelagic country. Indonesia consists of thousands of islands inhabited by various tribes, races and religions. Here are 34 provinces. In each province different rules apply.
Of the 34 provinces, only Aceh implements Islamic law. And Islamic law in Aceh only applies to Muslims. So if you are not a Muslim, you will not be able to choose Islamic law.
I am not in the cave of Islamic law. But I try to explain what I see here.
As far as I know, whips that are not here are not as extreme as they sound out. Many criminals have volunteered to request a taste according to Shari'a law. They did not want to have to spend months in jail, so they chose to be flogged several times.
And the foreign tourists here also never have problems with sharia law. There are very many tourists from different european countries here. They are free to dress like they like.
I hope one day you will come to Indonesia. You can come to Aceh or to other provinces. You should see firsthand. Or you can also to the island of Bali.

Johni,
I am no fan of islamic fundamentalism. However, corporal punishment such as caning has only recently gone out of fashion in the West. The American judicial caning was in Delaware in the earlier 1950s. Take a look at In Defense of Flogging by Peter Moskos. Yes, flogging is bad, and so is the criminal justice system. It does not rehabilitate anyone. Maybe caning would be a reasonable way to address certain crimes in the West.
