Hi everyone,
There have been many copyright violations on Yours in the past few days. Anyone who posts someone else's content and pretends it is their own is a copyright violation and you will be banned and the content will be deleted. We have banned 7 people for this so far. Furthermore, copying someone else's content behind the pay wall and charging less for it is also a bannable offense.
This is a free thread to allow discussion. Please let us know your thoughts on copyright violations or other thoughts you may have given the high volume of payments on this platform in the past few days.

Let me make a hypothesis.
Everyone know who is RiversAndMountains , he can earn much money by his content in YOURS.
If someone create a new account , set the same avatar ,the nickname is also called RiversAndMountains. do you know which one is the real one.
If you enter the homepage, you may know which one is the real, but when the new account publish some articles. Most people can't tell who is true.
The new copy acount just write: Today, i do a researh about BitcoinCash, then set the pay price is 100$, i think many peolpe will purchase. because they trust RiversAndMountains. Now you may be aware of this problem, and we need a mechanism that can prove or verify the authenticity of the account. just like steemit's user reputation.so In addition to official certification of author information, If we set up a reputation mechanism, what data should we use as a basis. vote?earn? post?age?
Maybe ban can stop such problems for the time being, but it needs to be handled manually, and I'm more inclined to build a user reputation mechanism.

I put my yours profile name in the title of this video to prove my Youtube is mine. I think it is worse than copyright infringement to impersonate people it is identity theft. Thors ban hammer for them

@Jared Schlar youtube or other website, A lot of the resources are open, and we can share them. When sharing, it is best to add the author's information.
But in yours, you share and you can earn cash, This question needs to be discussed.

@Jared Schlar: Current thinking on embedded content is that it is OK as it is standard convention on the internet that embedded content is not necessarily something you created. It is already widely regarded that embedded content is likely created by someone else and furthermore that they desire it to be shared because it can be pasted in embedded form, e.g. Soundcloud or YouTube.

I think a free market economy is fine, and even a good thing. People can decide with their money what they choose to support and enrich themselves and their pursuits with.
But, even the wild, wild west wasn't lawless. There does have to be some rules in the house, and of course, for the site itself, there are legal issues on matters of copyright.
So, good direction I think.
I think a good metric for ratings would be
  1. Paywall purchases + Votes + Comments
  2. Traffic
Right now I know to reply to comments I have to buy a comment from myself. As far as I can tell it seems to reflect in the money earned value as well.
Tough to get around people gaming the system with alt accounts, but traffic stats seem to provide a good balance to the index.

I think this is a good idea. There have been people posting other people's work. Some have been useful, such as the video about the Lightning Network. I don't think I would have found that without Yours.org; it seems like a difficult balance and I hope there is room for discussion about copyrighted content, but strict enough to enforce blatant use of other people's work for self-profit.

@Jeffrey Butts: As stated above I don't believe posting an embedded video qualifies as a copyright violation.
I should have been more clear about what's happening:
  1. People are copying articles wholesale from CoinDesk, CoinTelegraph, Gizmodo, etc., and pasting the entire article here unmodified, sometimes with parts behind a pay wall. This is a copyright violation and will result in deletion and banning.
  2. At least one person has copied someone else's content behind the pay wall and placed it behind their own pay wall for less money. This is also unacceptable and will result in deletion and banning.
Posting embedded content is fine, even if it doesn't belong to you. That is because embedded content is designed to be shared. If the creator doesn't want it to be embeddable then they shouldn't be posting it to YouTube, Soundcloud, etc., in the first place, because those places allow embedding to encourage sharing.

  1. Posting someone else's content and passing it off as your own content is plagiarism aka theft. It's even worse to put it behind the paywall and charge people for it. People who do that should be banned. Forever.
  2. Creating new content where you maybe do an opinion piece and quote other people in my mind would be o.k. as long as links and attribution are given. But the majority of the content should be original.
  3. Impersonating other people who have credibility so that you can scam people into paying more for content is off the scale wrong. Ryan, do you think we need an identity verification process? There was one mentioned in Slack a while ago. I forget the name of it.

@SandyB:
Agreed with all your points.
Yes, we will need an identify verification tool of some sort. This will be opt-in so that when you make a payment for someone you can have some idea how "verified" they are before making the payment. We will use some combination of auth with Twitter, Civic, Blockstack, etc., for this purpose. Following will also help, like Twitter, to see if someone you trust follows someone else.

Do people really need it explained to them that if a site chooses to ban you for violating their terms of service, they did not take away your free speech? They took away your access to their site, not your free speech. You can practice free speech anywhere you are allowed to post.

While copyright is may be the most useful legal framework (required for DMCA safe harbor, internationally “harmonized”) I think the proper ethical/utilitarian framing for this is plagiarism and impersonation. To that end, reputation and verification are as, if not more important than the actual content flagging/reporting.
To be clear, fraudsters are an existential threat to Yours (or any model that seeks to reward/encourage a quality content ecosystem) and IMO they need to be punished with extreme prejudice. It’s worth noting that this is a separate issue from copyrighted content where authorship isn’t claimed (where fair use and other factors are at play and where IMO current IP law oversteps social norms).

maybe have ppl sign up with Civic? I'm not sure if it's production ready or not yet. Provable BCH address could be interesting too. Everyone will soon have "public" and "private" addresses; some to verify themselves and some to privately store wealth.

This is a troubling development and I hope it can be resolved while minimizing damage to the platform's promise.

While I understand the sense of alarm and urgency that leads to bans, I think this response is ineffective in the long run because I believe all these behaviors that concern us are simply a consequence of the current structure of incentives on the platform. Given this connection, these problems couldn't be realistically expected to disappear so long as that structure remains unchanged. Banning is a lot like swatting flies: It feels like progress, but the work is never finished.

It may be that this plagiarism nonsense was incentivized at least in part by the paywall model. If it had always been the case that only donations and tips were possible, then all payments would be made AFTER seeing the content, NOT before. With this alternative structure in place, I believe there would be less incentive to copy and paste in the hopes of profit because posters would always be required to put everything up first, and risk being exposed by others.

Scammers are hiding behind the paywall because it gives them a way to collect without any proof of value in exchange. The paywall is also alluring to scammers because there is no recourse for buyers who come away feeling defrauded afterwards. With a paywall, buyers can only HOPE that a content provider has something worth buying. Without a paywall, buyers have to be genuinely impressed with what the content provider has already presented before those buyers will be willing to pay.

Would this arrangement make it harder for content providers to receive earnings? Yes. And that's exactly what you want if disincentivizing scams is your goal. What better way to ensure that only the best content gets rewarded than by demanding transparency from all posters of content, and by insisting that posters present their content primarily for its own sake, at least initially, thereby making the allure of remuneration a less direct motivation? This way, instead of incentivizing mere postings, we're incentivizing reputations. Seen this way around, no one is actually paying for content. Rather, they're paying to support those people they already appreciate.

It's easier to scam people on a platform where all that matters is the content of posts. It's harder to scam people on a platform where everyone is expected to spend time and trouble building a brand, a product, or a following.

I enjoy when people post under their own name. I think it adds credibility and maybe there should be some benefits for those of us who risk using our real names....

Indeed, spamming and plagiarism is the biggest problem for the rewarding blockchain platforms. I guess with the development of blockchain based social media. There would be some specific anti-plagiarism service coming in the future.

People with no intention of abusing copyright or plagiarism naturally have no problem with blocking or bannings of that nature. If it bothers you, you might want sit down and think about why.

Is the author selling the content that he puts behind the paywall? What if the author's content is valued and has won an award elsewhere? Has he sold his rights to the content?
Also, is it okay to put a statement about copyrighted or protected (such as ProtectRite) content in front of or behind the paywall?

@Ryan I just tested it and I believe I confirmed that if I comment in my own posts that the 88c is added to the earnings total.
It shows as a deduction in the wallet page as well.
Does it actually deduct from the blockchain?

Ya question, if I'm paying to post and you come and delete or ban me do I get a refund or do you just rob anyone you deem to be a violator? See, u tube don't charge to upload so if they ban u at least they don't steal from ya. I was under the impression that "yours" was a freedom platform regulated by the voters and payer's. Hence if someone is constantly stealing and plagiarizing then u would think everyone would learn his account and quit paying them, sure they could spam accounts and repeat but I really think you ryan should let this regulate itself... If not then at some point in the future you will be forced into the uncomfortable position of the "yours" dictator and policeman... just sounds exhausting. maybe get A.I to do it, wait just go back to u tube if it's censored to death. let the market decide, what's the worst that could happen

Please add a way to report scammers and copyright violators and some kind of a reputation system or something. Now the scammer can set a high price for making a comment and seems there is no simple way to warn others. All I can do is click "no" the post wasn't useful and the scammer can go pay himself multiple times with fake accounts.
Buyer beware.

I think it was a necessary move. If people were allowed to post others' content on here and earn money, there would be high amounts of people spamming outside posts, which would belittle the point of this site. The point is to get the creators themselves a way to generate income.

Hi Ryan,
Thanx for coming up with this post. For my health conditions I'm not able to make animations and post it here with whatever little talent I have. Today I saw someone is using the animations I made.
This is the user who is doing this https://www.yours.org/user/gtx1050/
here are the links

I would be happy to if you take the necessary steps. People using a creation of someone else is not a bad thing, but providing no credits to the creator is an inhuman thing to do and it hurts the creator. All my posts have not done great in the past in terms of money but if someone else make money out of them then that is a shame for the platform.
Love,
Monica

Hey Ryan, Dispite the little problem I had at the beginning of this new endeavour, I like the idea and think the bar for original, quality content should be set as high as bloody possible.
P.S. more catagories and a search button, would be great to have.

About the NSFW category/topic: should there be some extra guidelines? Or it's totally fine for anything, just concerned about when things get big will someone want to shut it down since those possibilities arise, even like just stopping the site. Perhaps find some sort of legal advisor in the blockchain to give some quick evaluation? Just to be safe.
