If I had to guess, I'd say the Yours team has a perfectly good reason for having their users go to the extra step of using third-party hosting sites to provide the space to locally post storage-heavy content, such as pictures or videos. The costs of hosting are probably high for any kind of social media experiment, and so any help that might come from offloading some of that burden to other hosting providers is probably essential to any social media upstart. At least, that's how I make sense of the extra step. So, on that basis, I don't complain about needing to go to imgbb.com first before I can put my pics up on Yours. I get it. Hosting everything locally isn't always feasible, especially early on.
I imagine then that this is the rationale, also, behind requiring us to get our avatars established through the use of Gravatar, which I understand is a service provided through Wordpress. I actually have a Wordpress account and have had one for years. So getting started with putting a profile pic on Yours should have been no problem. Unfortunately, I have been locked out of that account for years. The security is evidently very tight, as if we are expected to blog about our bank account numbers, and so desperately need to keep out thieves. But finally, after great difficulty, I broke through this bulwark, only to find that the interface had changed, and was no longer even scarcely comprehensible. Big surprise. I left Wordpress a long time ago because of usability issues, and that concern hasn't gone away, because nothing in that regard has changed.
So I'm not going to have a profile picture on Yours if having one through Gravatar is going to be the only way to get it. I see this as unfortunate, since I believe it harms my visibility (and possibly to some extent, my credibility) to go without one, and so I would like for there to be an alternative way to get one. While it would certainly increase the demands on resources to host avatar data locally, I think it likely wouldn't be impossible to shoulder such a burden, since profile pics are typically much lower res than the ones people share every day from their phones on Instagram.
I have had this concern about being hamstrung in my self-representation efforts almost from the beginning of my time on Yours. But I didn't think to make this issue explicit until I saw how one of the more recent changes to the Yours platform is shaping up, the one where we now see thumbnail versions of everyone's avatars standing in for their names in all the voting and tipping breakdowns that follow any user's original posts. Since the avatars are depicted without any reference to names, at least at a glance, the fact that some of us are still stuck with the "phantom default" presents an even bigger issue than it did before, in that the new system is only presenting the necessary information to any viewers of the post to the extent that all other users are actually going through with the Gravatar registration process.
I think there should be another option, even if that were merely that there was another third-party hosting option. This would still be better than nothing. Maybe there could be some way of allowing people to put their profile pics on imgbb.com or another pic hosting site, and link a personal pic to their Yours profile that way. As I see it, that would be at least as much a solution to the problem as what we are already doing for everything else we want to share here.
For profile picture uploads to NOT work this way, or some other way, or in any possible alternative way is, to put it mildly, less than ideal. I realize, of course, that this issue could easily be low priority for the Yours team right now, and that is fine. At the very least, I'd like to know that it is being taken into consideration. Because I'd like to have a face some day.

Are you able to use a fresh email address (like through ProtonMail, for example) to get an avatar (through Gravatar)? It took me a few minutes to set up, but was worth it for the reasons you mentioned. (Or maybe I'm not remembering the sign-up process and whether everything is done through a single email address.)

Hi Richard,
Adding image uploads is on our issues list. It's not about the cost of hosting the image, but rather the cost of doing the development of that feature. We've simply been implementing other things first. User uploaded images, including avatars, is rapidly moving up our issues list as we finish the other issues :)

Thanks for the suggestion. But to be perfectly honest, I'm not interested in exploring the Gravatar option, even by means other than going through Wordpress. Sorry for not making this clear earlier.

It can't use up THAT much space to store a few tiny gifs can it? I see most people have no faces. It'd add to a sense of community if we did

" It can't use up THAT much space to store a few tiny gifs can it?"
That's definitely what I was thinking. Though after seeing Ryan's comment, I gather that this is not really the issue anyway.
"I see most people have no faces. It'd add to a sense of community if we did."
Completely agree.
