The road tried to tell me something As I skipped along its path Tumbling and turning Burning and smeared It peeled me like an egg And fried me on the street I laid down to die Waiting for something that never came Some last bit of wisdom A last measure of salvation I thought I heard the rattling Of St. Peter’s keys But the keys were from the EMTs And then from the mortician And then from the grave digger As he laid me in the hole As dumb as I’ve ever been And never to be any smarter But that’s what happens When you’ve made yourself dumb Actively, intentionally With yet another bad call By turning your eye from the road For what seemed like a second To see what’s been going on On other paths that maybe You should’ve taken
