Last week, as an experiment, we decreased the cost of posting from 10¢ to zero. In its place, we now require that for any post to actually show up on the "hot" page it must receive at least one payment. The primary motivating factor for this was to decrease the burden of posting for new users. It is now possible for users to earn their way in by posting high quality content *without* already having any money.
The original motivation for the 10¢ cost was to decrease spam (some users posted hundreds of posts containing no content filling up the "new" and "hot" page). While it was successful at decreasing spam, we are worried it was too big of a barrier to new users. So we're going to try keeping the cost at zero for a while an explore other mechanisms to decrease spam.

Yay! Paying to post (i.e. provide content) was a bit counterintuitive, but I understand the spam issue.

I like the free post as long as it doesnt change the feel of things on yours. This will help to welcome more users. Maybe if there was a way to report spam or flag it if we see any???

Agreed. Having to pay is a great barrier for entry. How about 10 free articles a day? No body writes more than 10 good-quality articles a day.

How about you make them mine some Monero for you with their fully informed consent?

I like this idea of making posting free and requiring payment in order to actually show up on the "hot" page. That should help control spam too.
One question, though: What if one makes their article free, then there would never be a payment. Is voting also considered a payment?

@Glenn: Votes and tips also count towards the payments volume.

This is a really great idea! Kudos for doing this. I have another idea that might really help with free marketing, steemit kinda has something like - Maybe yours.org should automatically take a tiny percent from each and every action that happens on yours.org and put it in a community pool. Then once a month use the pool to send evenly to all active users providing even more an incentive and inclusion to participate and contribute, this will have the effect of encouraging friends and family to join in on the fun. "Yep you even get paid a little just for being here, check it out!" - I'm really enjoying Yours.org and I see nothing but huge potential, keep up the great work!
